Snow Day 2014

...only there really wasn't any snow to speak of. We went to sleep the night before hopeful, but not confident. Even so, you can bet there were tears in the early morning {especially Mallory} when the girls woke up and there was no snow. I think they probably dreamed all night about pretending to be Anna and Elsa!

Not knowing if it would be another three~or~four years before they see snow again, we had to bundle up {for a very little while and wearing as many polka~dotted~patterned garments we could find} and play in the "snow."

Snow Day

What better way to be snowbound than with a house full of brand new toys?

It snowed just about all day today, but none of it stuck and the sun never came out, so we didn't even leave the house. Good thing the girls had plenty to entertain them.

Snow in Summerville!

This is what we woke up to this morning...As soon as Anna Claire and Mallory had breakfast, we got bundled up and headed outside. What does "bundled up" consist of? Tights, leggings, socks, onesie, turtleneck, sweater, coat, hat, mittens, and boots.

First steps in the snow...First fall in the snow...I don't know anything about snow, but the snow early this morning was very fluffy and did not stick to itself. Nevertheless, we did manage a small snowman with grapes for eyes, goldfish for a nose and mouth, and pine needle hair.We don't have any toys for playing in the snow (and I don't even know what those toys would be), so we pulled out our buckets and shovels we used at the beach last summer. It turns out they work just as well in snow as they do in sand.First snow balls...Family photo... Grandmom and Aunt Dot came over for a little while to play.Then we headed over to Granny and Papa's for a little more fun in the snow. The girls took turns taking toboggan rides.Well, we don't actually have a real toboggan, but we can turn the top of the sandbox upside down and let Papa pull us around the yard.

One last snowman. The girls had already called it a day, and by the time I was able to round up an extra hat and scarf, the snowman was already made!

What a day! We may not see another like it for a looonnngggg time, so I am glad we all made the most of it!

It's Snowing!

This is less than an hour's accumulation from earlier this evening, and it seems like it's going to be coming down like this for awhile. We can't wait to see what things look like in the morning!

Both Anna Claire and Mallory were carried outside by Walter to experience the snowfall for just a few seconds before Mommy called it off; Mallory has been quite sick this week, after all.

We are certainly going to plan to bundle up and go outside tomorrow if even for the littlest while so the girls can play in the snow!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow

This afternoon it finally warmed up enough for the girls to play outside. And tonight the weather channel is calling for snow! We all know how that goes, so it will be interesting to see if we get any precipitation at all and how that may (or may not) affect school tomorrow.

New Day & Snow Day

Walter's mom kept the girls today, and I made it home for lunch just in time for us all to watch most of President Obama's speech together. I think these are some of my favorite words from his speech:

"...The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness....Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."

While I am certain Anna Claire and Mallory had no clue what was happening on the TV, I do think it's pretty darn cool that one day I will be able to tell them that in their first year we elected out first African American President. I am hopeful about the life they have ahead of them.

And as if that's not exciting enough - it snowed today! Okay, there were maybe five snow flakes, but schools and the district office were closed at 2 PM. You know everything shuts down around here at the first mention of either hurricanes or snow. Anna Claire and Mallory had no idea there was any snow at all and it was way too cold to take them outside to "see" the few flakes that were falling.

Basically, the girls went through this momentous day completely oblivious to all that was happening around them - both historic and weather-related.
